Key Largo
During a summer trip to Florida in 2006, a few of us took some time to head down to Key Largo, and check out the diving of course! Our first stop was an old Navy ship called the USS Spiegel Grove. The USS Spiegel Grove is a Landing Ship Dock (LSD 32), which has been sunk to create an artificial reef just off of Key Largo. The vessel is 510 feet in length and 84 feet wide. Her top levels are in about 60-65 feet of water and it's 134 feet to the sand! It is a GREAT dive. Lot's to see all around the outside of the ship as well as plenty of access for wreck penetrations for those properly trained. (Bring lots of air...)For more info on the Spiegel Grove, visit here --> www.spiegelgrove.com
After the Spiegel dive, we headed for a beautiful shallow reef and a spot called Minnow Caves. You'll see why below.
On this trip, we dove with the gang at Captain Slates. We were well taken care of by a great crew. (Thanks Jen!) If you are in the neighborhood, I strongly recommend them, they do a great job. For more info, visit them at www.captainslate.com
It was a wonderful afternoon, a nice break and a "must dive" if you're in the neighborhood or a great excuse to get to the neighborhood!
